For 0-6 Month Olds:
- Lots of Diapers & Wipes – My twins were in preemie diapers for the 1st couple of weeks, they were 5 lbs 3 ozs & 5 lbs 8 ozs at birth (I delivered at 37 weeks).
- Preemie (& above) Sleepers – You are likely going to need some preemie sleepers. I highly recommend looking for zipper sleepers when you can, with constantly changing 2 babies it is so much quicker to have zippers rather than buttons.
- Twin Z Nursing Pillow – This nursing pillow was my best friend for the 10 months that I nursed my twins, I brought it everywhere! I found it so useful when nursing my twins either individually or tandem! The middle piece that you pull up to support your back is amazing. When I was freshly postpartum and had a sore back from pushing, I stuck my heating pad against the back support piece and it was so nice to have a heating pad on my back while I was nursing.
- Portable Breast Pump – If you have any plans on pumping I would recommend getting a portable pump so you can have your hands free. I had an electric plug-in pump with my twins because it is what I had already purchased with my daughter but I wish I had bought a new portable pump with my twins, it would have been a game changer to not be attached to a wall while trying to tend to my twins at the same time. If I had bought a portable pump I would have purchased the Medela Freestyle Hands-Free Breast Pump because I love Medela products.
- Double Bottle Warmer – We had the Grownsy Double Bottle Warmer and found it to work well and efficiently.
- Twin Bassinet – I used the Halo BassiNest Twin Sleeper – I liked that it has adjustable height because we have a tall bed. It is also able to do a 360 swivel, this made grabbing and soothing the babies a lot easier since I could turn the bassinet to reach whichever twin was fussing.
- Bassinet Sheets – Make sure to have a couple changes of sheets, I found during the newborn stage when they would spit up more that I needed to switch their bassinet sheets pretty often.
- 2 Owlet Socks – I used Owlet Socks with my twins for about the 1st 6 to 9 months, once I knew they could roll around and get into a comfortable sleep position on their own then I stopped using them. It gave myself and my husband so much peace of mind knowing that our babies heart rates and oxygen levels were being monitored and we would be alerted if there was any concern. It allowed me to sleep peacefully when both twins were asleep, which is so crucial during those sleep deprivation months!
- 2 Swings – You don’t need super fancy swings, just one that has a nice back and forth swinging motion (adjustable speed is a good feature to look for) and that keeps your babies secure and in a safe position. I kept both swings in the living room, which allowed me to have a safe place to put them during the day where they could sleep or relax. Yes, having 2 swings takes up a lot of room, but honestly it is for such a short period of time and it makes such a difference having a safe cozy spot to put both babies during the day. I know it is obvious but I just have to say this to be safe, the babies need to be always watched while in the swings.
- 2 Baby Bouncers – Both of my baby bouncers mostly stayed in my bathroom. The reason for this, it gave me a safe spot to put both babies while I had a shower, got ready for the day, etc. So crucial!
- 2 Dockatots or Snuggle Me Loungers – I ended up getting 2 Snuggle Me Loungers during the newborn phase since it gave me another safe spot to put the babies down during the day while on the main floor. Again, babies need to be watched the whole time they are in the loungers.
- 2 Cribs & 2 Mattresses
- Crib Sheets
- Dual Baby Monitor – I have the Hubble Nursery View Pro Twin Baby Monitor and really like it! The picture is clear and the cameras move side to side and up and down. I like that it has a split screen so I can see both babies at the same time. The volume works well and the sound plays for whichever camera is selected on the monitor screen, if your twins are sleeping in the same room then this won’t be an issue since you can hear both babies through either camera monitor. When we travel we typically only bring one of the cameras and then can just have the 1 camera on the monitor screen. We prefer to have monitors that don’t need wifi so we can use them anywhere.
- 2 Ballhead Arm Camera Clamp Mount – The best camera (for your baby monitor) hanging hack! This is a mount you can secure your camera on and clamp on to so many places! This clamp is extremely sturdy and made of aluminum alloy and stainless steel. Once clamped, you can fully move your camera around with a 360° rotation to turn the monitor in any direction!
- 2 Car Seats – My twins each had an UPPABaby Mesa Infant Car Seat and I found these to work really well, especially because they attached easily to our stroller system.
- 2 Baby Car Mirrors
- Stroller & Stroller Attachments – We had the UPPABaby Vista from our daughter so we bought the attachments to make it usable with our twins. This YouTube video HERE shows you how to convert the UPPABaby Vista to work for twins and what attachments to buy. The UPPABaby Vista stroller is pricey upfront, but we have definitely gotten our money’s worth out of it! I like how this stroller easily fits through doors, on elevators, etc. Rather than a side by side double stroller. Yes, it can be a bit bulky to transport in a vehicle but we have a minivan and have had no issues fitting it in our van.
6-12 Months:
- 2 High Chairs – We have the Ingenuity Smartclean Trio Elite 3-in-1 High Chairs – in Slate. The best feature is that they are fully wipeable, with no fabric! Whichever high chairs you choose, I recommend looking for ones that do not have fabric, the fabric gets gross so fast! Find ones that are completely wipeable. The Ingenuity high chairs have worked well for us and are very reasonably priced.
- 2 Skip Hop Explore & More Baby’s View 3-Stage Activity Centers – I love that the bottom piece that your baby stands on is adjustable to their height so it truly grows with them! I also love that it is a stationary activity center (not a jumping exersaucer). I now have 2 of these activity centers in my bathroom (they replaced the baby bouncers) so that my twins, who are now almost 1.5 years old, still have a contained safe spot to be while I have a shower, get ready for the day, etc.
My last must-have twin item is a bit of a joke but also my reality – is a minivan! Please keep in mind that I have 3 children, a 4 year old and 1.5 year old twin toddlers (I can’t believe they aren’t “babies” anymore!) but I honestly don’t know how we would be able to transport all of our children and our belongings without our minivan. We have a Honda Odyssey and I can’t recommend it enough!
